Lagos To Decommission Olusosun, Solous III Landfills As Govt Advances Waste-To-Resource Plan
The Lagos state government through the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab has revealed plans to decommission the Olushosun and Soulos III landfills, given that they have outlived their usefulness and lifespan.
This was disclosed during a convention with all 57 Local Governments and Development Council Chairmen to underscore its commitment to collaborate and achieve a cleaner, flood-free and sustainable environment across the state.
Speaking during the meeting held at Alausa, Wahab noted that other landfills are still functional such as the one at Epe, noting that Lagos is moving from the linear waste system (pick and drop) to a system where waste becomes a resource and as such all LGAs/LCDAs must team up with the state to tackle all environmental issues to reduce wastes that end up at the landfills.
Moving on with his speech, the commissioner also urged LG chairmen to sensitize residents about the dangers of improper waste disposal, disposing waste in open spaces, on the roads, medians, drainages and canals amongst others, while beseeching residents to imbibe good sanitation habits as a daily lifestyle.
He also underscored the need for all LGAs/LCDAs to team up with the state in getting a sustainable solution to flash flooding issues across the state, adding that they must emulate the state government in relentlessly putting resilient infrastructure in place to tackle the issue. He also encouraged chairmen to always reach out to resident engineers attached to their areas to report flooding issues, adding that they have been empowered to resolve or escalate issues.
Wahab reaffirmed the enforcement of ban on street trading, urging chairmen to discourage this illegal activity in their LGAs.
The Chairman of Conference 57 and the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Sesan Olowa appreciated the stakeholders’ engagement, noting that all the chairmen have been working to ensure a cleaner and sustainable environment in Lagos through proper waste management across the metropolis.
He added that some LGAs/LCDAs had procured tricycles that go into inner streets in their areas to effectively support house-to-house waste collection instead of people bringing their waste to the main roads or median, appealing to the Commissioner to ensure that all LGAs/LCDAs collaborate and build mini Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) in their areas for ease of waste disposal in their different communities.
