Edo Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Building Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that can withstand environmental shocks, ensuring that disaster risk reduction remains central to governance.
Okpebholo gave the assurance during an event organised by the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) to commemorate the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, held at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy in Benin City.
Represented by the Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, the Governor stressed that disaster resilience begins with sound policies and sustained funding. He noted his administration’s determination to strengthen institutions responsible for safeguarding citizens, enabling them to respond swiftly and effectively during crises.
The Governor stated that this year’s theme, “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” aligned with Edo State’s proactive approach to mitigating the risks associated with climate change and natural hazards such as flooding, erosion, and windstorms.
According to him, Edo State has continued to experience the growing impacts of climate change, which necessitate strategic action.
He said his administration, through EdoSEMA, has prioritised several interventions — including strengthening early warning systems, enhancing response coordination, establishing community disaster management committees, providing relief materials to affected persons, and forging partnerships with private and international organisations for technical and financial support.
In his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, commended the Governor for his continuous support in enhancing the agency’s operational capacity.
He urged stakeholders to work collectively to promote disaster prevention and preparedness at the community level.
“The State Government has given us full support to act swiftly whenever emergencies arise. However, disaster prevention is everyone’s responsibility. We must continue to educate, sensitise, and engage our communities,” Idahosa stated.
