Senator Seriake Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the National Assembly, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, announced his defection during a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, citing unresolved internal crises within the PDP as the reason for his departure.
He said persistent leadership disputes within the opposition party had weakened its structure and diminished its ability to function effectively as a credible political platform.
According to him, the prolonged internal disagreements had shrunk the party’s influence and created divisions that made it difficult for many members, including himself, to continue operating within it.
Dickson also criticised the party’s response to national issues, stating that the PDP had gradually lost its voice in the country’s political space due to the lingering internal conflicts.
“The irreconcilable differences within the PDP have shrunk its umbrella, which can no longer accommodate many members, including myself. The leadership tussle has crippled the party, and it has lost its voice on national issues,” he said.
The senator expressed confidence in the NDC, recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a platform capable of providing the kind of opposition needed to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
He urged Nigerians who share the vision of a stronger political alternative to identify with and register as members of the new party in pursuit of what he described as a better future for the country.
