FIBA Recognises Kida-Led NBBF, Sets October 2026 Election Deadline

The leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), headed by its President, Engr. Musa Ahmed Kida, has received a major international endorsement following formal recognition by the global governing body, FIBA.

In a letter dated March 16, 2026, FIBA affirmed the Kida-led administration as the legitimate leadership of Nigerian basketball and fixed October 15, 2026, as the deadline for the federation’s next elective congress.

The decision effectively resolves lingering governance disputes and boosts confidence in the direction of the sport under Kida’s leadership.

FIBA’s directive comes at a time when Nigerian basketball—particularly the women’s national team, D’Tigress—continues to record impressive achievements on the global stage.

In the latest FIBA World Rankings, Nigeria’s women’s team is ranked eighth in the world, reflecting sustained investment, planning, and competitive excellence.

The ranking places Nigeria among leading basketball nations such as the United States, France, and Australia, underscoring the impact of the current leadership.

Under Kida, the NBBF has navigated turbulent periods marked by administrative disputes and international sanctions but has regained stability since 2022, with FIBA noting improved governance structures.

Meanwhile, the Director General of National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has backed the development, urging stakeholders to align with FIBA’s position, stating that it should end divisions within the basketball community.
