Two serious injuries and three rescues in separate road crashes that occurred over the weekend at Mile 2 and Surulere.
At Olohunsogo Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, a Toyota Camry reportedly rammed into a stationary Scania truck. LASTMA officials at the scene said the Camry driver and a passenger sustained severe injuries and were taken to the hospital opposite Ijanikin Police Station for treatment.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the Agency said preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speeding led to the driver’s loss of control. LASTMA officers apprehended the truck driver, while police operatives from Ijanikin Division provided security. The wreckage was swiftly cleared to restore traffic flow.
In another incident at Stadium Hotel, Ojuelegba, Surulere, a white commercial Mazda bus crashed into the BRT lane median after reportedly suffering brake failure. The driver, who was unconscious at the time of rescue, and two passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital.
One of the survivors, Mrs. Aina Kadri, said the accident occurred after the bus lost its brakes at high speed. Fortunately, all three victims survived.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the quick response of officers and the Nigeria Police in managing the emergencies. He urged motorists to obey speed limits and carry out routine vehicle checks, stressing that overspeeding and poor maintenance are major causes of avoidable crashes.
