The Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women’s empowerment in line with its SHINE agenda, which promotes the holistic development of women across the state.
The assurance was given at the South-South Zonal Conference of the Stand Up for Women Society (SWS) International, held at Urhokpota Hall, Ring Road, Benin City, as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.
Speaking at the event, the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, reiterated the Senator Monday Okpebholo-led administration’s dedication to enhancing women’s economic and social empowerment, stressing the need to create opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to development.
Mrs. Anani, represented by the Director-General of the Edo State Directorate of Education, Quality and Accountability (DEQA), Dr. Amen Ogbemudia, said the government is implementing initiatives focused on skills development, entrepreneurship support, and access to opportunities to strengthen women’s roles in society.
She commended the governor’s leadership in promoting women’s welfare and inclusion, noting that efforts are being intensified to protect women from violence, abuse, and discrimination, while recognising their role in building a just and progressive society.
She emphasised that achieving justice for women requires collective action among government institutions, policymakers, community leaders, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, and individuals to challenge harmful practices and promote equality.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Gabriel Iduseri, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Ebegue Igho-Osagie, appreciated SWS for choosing Edo State as the conference venue and commended both the organisation’s initiatives and the state government’s policies promoting women’s inclusion.
In her welcome address, SWS International President, Lib. (Mrs.) Deborah Ijadele-Adetona, represented by Lib. Timi Jombo-Idoko, urged members to expand the organisation’s reach, while the Zonal Vice President, Lib. (Dr.) Pat Onuwaje, described the event as a call to action for a society where women and girls can thrive.
