Shaibu Hails Adamu’s Historic Emergence As CAF Acting Secretary General

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has hailed the appointment of Samson Adamu as Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing it as a historic achievement.

In a statement personally signed, Shaibu congratulated Adamu and noted that his emergence represents a moment of pride for Nigeria and reflects the country’s growing influence in global sports administration.

He stated that Adamu’s appointment, ratified by the CAF Congress on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position in over 70 years of CAF’s existence.

“Your appointment is not only well deserved but also a clear recognition of your linguistic dexterity, competence, dedication, and wealth of experience in football administration,” Shaibu said.

He commended Adamu’s impressive track record, particularly his tenure as CAF Director of Events and Tournaments, where he played a key role in the successful organisation of major continental competitions.

Shaibu also highlighted Adamu’s international exposure, including his graduation from the prestigious FIFA Master’s Programme in 2009, as well as his multilingual abilities, which he said have adequately prepared him for the demands of the office.

“Your elevation to this sensitive and strategic position is a source of inspiration to young Nigerians and sports administrators across Africa. I have no doubt that you will justify the confidence reposed in you and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of football on the continent,” he added.

Shaibu also acknowledged the outgoing Secretary General, Veron Mosengo-Omba of DR Congo, commending his service to CAF and wishing him success in his future endeavours.
