Nigeria’s flagbearers in the CAF Champions League, Rangers International of Enugu, have advanced to the next round of the competition.
The reigning NPFL champions secured their passage on Friday after a hard-fought 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Sobemap of Benin Republic.
The second-leg encounter, played at the Stade de Kégué in Togo, ended 1-1 after regulation time, leaving the two-legged tie level at 2-2 on aggregate.
Both sides had played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg last Sunday in Abeokuta.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Rangers held their nerve to win 5-4 and secure qualification for the next stage.
The Flying Antelopes will face either MC Algiers of Algeria or Nigelec in the second round, scheduled for October.
Nigeria’s other continental representatives, Rivers United, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and El-Kanemi Warriors in the CAF Confederation Cup, will also be in action this weekend in their respective second-leg fixtures.
