The Lagos State Government has called for stronger coordination and collaboration with voluntary uniform organisations in public schools to promote discipline, leadership, integrity and positive values among students.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, made the call during an interactive session with representatives of the five approved voluntary uniform organisations operating in the state.
Dokunmu-Adegbite stressed the need for the organisations to align their activities with the state’s educational objectives and directed each group to submit a harmonised annual calendar of activities to the Ministry for approval.
She also clarified that school premises should not be used for their activities, except for approved Wednesday co-curricular programmes, encouraging the organisations to explore parks and gardens for suitable outdoor activities.
Emphasising the need to strengthen discipline, integrity, good morals and academic performance among students, the Permanent Secretary said, “We want all-round students.”
She noted that the government could not address every aspect of youth development alone and urged credible organisations to deepen their partnership with the state in raising responsible and disciplined young people.
At the meeting, the Nigerian Red Cross Society team lead, Mr. Lasisi Olakunle, presented a proposal on sustaining the activities of voluntary uniform organisations in Lagos schools.
The five approved organisations are the Boys Scouts, Girls Guides, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Brigade and Sheriff Guards.
