…calls for integrated mental health services
The Lagos State University (LASU) has hosted the 11th International Conference of Community Psychology (ICCP 2026), bringing together scholars, policymakers, psychologists and community leaders to examine psychology’s role in improving community well-being.
Held at the Femi Gbajabiamila Hall, in Ojo campus, the conference was themed: “Gathering in the Motherland: Celebrating Lifeways, Ways of Water and Reconnecting to the Source.”
In his remarks, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, described psychology as essential to addressing challenges in education, healthcare, governance, security and leadership.
He said public policies must reflect people’s emotions, aspirations and lived experiences.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, urged scholars to listen to communities and translate research into practical solutions.
Delivering the keynote on behalf of the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, Dr Leonard Okonkwo called for mental health services to be integrated into primary healthcare and for stronger collaboration among professionals and community leaders.
The President of the Pan-African Psychology Union, Prof. Andrew Zamani, urged African psychologists to address the psychological effects of slavery and colonialism while strengthening ties with the diaspora.
The conference features scientific sessions, panel discussions and community engagement activities focused on research, policy and sustainable community well-being.
