United States leading scorer Folarin Balogun will be available for the USA’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium in Seattle after FIFA suspended the implementation of his one-match ban.
Balogun had been sent off during the United States’ Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a dismissal that initially ruled him out of the last-16 encounter.
However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee invoked Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, allowing the implementation of the one-match suspension to be suspended for a probationary period of one year.
In a statement, FIFA confirmed that Balogun had been handed a one-match suspension for breaches of Articles 14 and 66 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code following his direct red card during the World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, 2026, at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
The world football governing body explained that, in line with Article 27 of the code, the suspension will not take immediate effect but will instead remain suspended during a one-year probationary period.
FIFA added that should Balogun commit another offence of a similar nature and gravity within the probationary period, the suspended sanction would automatically be enforced, in addition to any new disciplinary measures arising from the fresh offence.
The decision means the striker is now eligible to feature as the United States seek a place in the quarter-finals when they face Belgium in Seattle.
Responding to the ruling, U.S. Soccer welcomed the outcome, saying: “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”
