NASENI Seeks Stronger Research to Drive Innovation, Economic Growth

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has called for stronger research efforts to accelerate innovation and drive economic growth, urging researchers to intensify work that will deliver technological breakthroughs and support Nigeria’s industrial development.

The Director of the Nano Science Department, Dr. Chika Ezeanyanaso, made the call on Tuesday while declaring open the NASENI Hybrid Scientific Engagement Programme: Science Perspective, organised by the Science Infrastructure Directorate.

Ezeanyanaso described the seminar as a strategic platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration and innovation, aimed at strengthening research activities and supporting the country’s industrialisation agenda.

“This seminar provides an opportunity for colleagues to learn from one another and generate ideas that will support innovation and national economic growth,” she said, adding that scientific engagement should be driven by knowledge rather than hierarchy.

The director also commended the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, for his continued support for research and innovation, and appreciated the Overseeing Officer of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Institute (AMTDI), Jalingo, Mr. Barkindo Abdulrahman Bawuro.

The seminar featured a presentation by the Chief Engineer of the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Enugu, Engr. Dr. Samuel Wadzani Gadzama, who highlighted research achievements in nanoscience since 2013.

Gadzama disclosed that researchers successfully extracted nanocellulose fibre from pineapple leaves after extensive laboratory testing in Nigeria and abroad, noting that the material has significant industrial potential and can be used to produce biodegradable plastics and other environmentally friendly products.

In his vote of thanks, the Deputy Director of the Research Laboratory Department, Dr. Hassan Bakare, advocated closer collaboration between the Science and Engineering Infrastructure Directorates, saying such partnership would accelerate innovation and strengthen NASENI’s contribution to industrial growth and national development.
