The Lagos State Government on Wednesday reaffirmed its resolve to permanently clear the Okokomaiko–Orile road median of illegal traders and squatters, saying the corridor is reserved for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said during an inspection of the enforcement exercise that the state had repeatedly engaged traders occupying the median without a lasting solution.
He said the occupation of the median could no longer be tolerated, describing it as an abuse of public infrastructure built with taxpayers’ money.
He added that the wide median was designed for the rail project and warned that the government would continue monitoring and enforcement to prevent a return of illegal traders and squatters.
Wahab also urged residents to dispose of waste properly through their PSP operators and report service failures to LAWMA, warning against indiscriminate dumping on roads and medians.
He said the state was also stepping up sanitation enforcement in markets and that traders must take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
The commissioner disclosed that more than 100 offenders had been prosecuted in the past year for encroaching on road medians and violating environmental laws.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure, preserving the rail alignment, and keeping Lagos clean and sustainable.
