Already eliminated Turkey ended the United States’ unbeaten group-stage run with a stoppage-time winner in Los Angeles, claiming their first World Cup victory since 2002.
Kaan Ayhan scored the decisive goal with virtually the last kick after Turkey had fallen behind inside three minutes.
The hosts, backed by a lively crowd including Brad Pitt, Ed Norton and Owen Wilson, made a fast start despite nine changes. Auston Trusty fired home from a corner after being left unmarked, scoring after just two minutes and 13 seconds.
Turkey responded through Arda Guler, who finished from close range after a clever pass from Baris Alper Yilmaz, before Orkun Kokcu completed the turnaround before half-time.
The United States levelled after the break through Sebastian Berhalter’s superb 20-yard strike, and Christian Pulisic later went close to winning it.
Turkey also threatened, but Ayhan reacted quickest in stoppage time to turn in Can Uzun’s touch and seal the win.
Despite the result, Turkey finished bottom of the group and exited the tournament. The United States, already assured of top spot, will face Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on July 2 in Santa Clara.
