The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to promote locally manufactured renewable energy technologies under the Federal Government’s Nigeria First Policy.
The agreement was signed at the headquarters of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) in Abuja on Friday, with the Director-General of BPP, Dr. Adebowale Abraham Adedokun, facilitating the partnership between the two agencies.
Speaking at the event, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said the agency is committed to bridging the gap between research, production and commercialization to ensure that locally developed innovations become market-ready products.
Halilu stated that NASENI would scale up the production of renewable energy technologies, including solar panels and streetlights, through initiatives such as NASENI DevFrontier Green Energy FZE. He added that the agency aims to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported renewable energy equipment while meeting REA’s technology needs.
According to him, the MoU will strengthen local manufacturing and facilitate the domestication of renewable energy technologies, equipment and production processes, thereby boosting off-grid energy solutions and supporting the country’s energy transition goals.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of REA, Dr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, described the agreement as a strategic partnership designed to strengthen Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem.
He explained that while NASENI will provide manufacturing and technological capacity, REA will focus on deploying the solutions to expand electricity access in rural communities.
Adedokun said the Nigeria First Policy seeks to promote local content, ensure value for money and enhance accountability in public procurement. He noted that the implementation of the agreement would be performance-based, with strict monitoring mechanisms to guarantee compliance and measurable results.
Under the MoU, which will be implemented through NASENI DevFrontier Green Energy FZE and REA’s renewable asset management company, RAMCo, REA will offtake locally manufactured photovoltaic modules, inverters and energy storage batteries.
The agency will also facilitate NASENI’s participation in electrification projects, create engagement opportunities with developers and contractors under REA programmes, and collaborate in promoting standardized, high-quality solar technologies across the country.
