Co-hosts Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara.
The decisive moment came five minutes into the second half when Mexico midfielder Luis Romo tapped into an empty net after South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk.
The first half offered few clear chances, frustrating the home crowd, who voiced their displeasure by booing the Mexican team at halftime after a largely toothless attacking display.
South Korea threatened before the break when captain Son Heung-min chipped goalkeeper Raul Rangel, but Edson Alvarez cleared the ball off the line. However, the effort was ruled out as Son had been flagged offside.
Mexico looked more dangerous after taking the lead and nearly doubled their advantage in the 75th minute, but Raul Jimenez saw his effort from a tight angle saved by Kim.
Substitute Obed Vargas also came close to scoring late in the match, forcing Kim into an impressive diving save with a powerful strike from distance.
South Korea’s best opportunity arrived in the 87th minute when Cho Gue-sung’s close-range header was brilliantly stopped by Rangel, who then reacted quickly to deny Yang Hyun-jun on the rebound.
The victory maintained Mexico’s perfect start to the tournament and confirmed Javier Aguirre’s side as Group A winners. Mexico will remain in Mexico City for their round-of-32 match and a potential last-16 clash, while South Korea, despite the defeat, remain well placed to advance and will face South Africa in their final group-stage fixture. Mexico will take on the Czech Republic at the same time.
