Canada’s first-ever FIFA World Cup finals victory was overshadowed by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone as they cruised to a commanding 6-0 win over nine-man Qatar in Vancouver.
The distressing incident occurred in the second half with Canada already leading 3-0 and enjoying a numerical advantage. Kone and Qatar’s Assim Madibo challenged for the same ball, resulting in a lengthy stoppage as medical personnel attended to the Canadian midfielder.
Madibo was initially shown a yellow card for the challenge, but following a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the booking was upgraded to a red card. The incident left Canada manager Jesse Marsch visibly emotional on the touchline.
Despite the severity of the injury, Kone reassured supporters as he sat up and waved while being stretchered off the pitch. Fans chanted his name as he was taken around the side of the field while receiving pain relief treatment.
Before the injury, Canada had produced a dominant display. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a close-range finish before Jonathan David doubled the lead 13 minutes later. Qatar’s problems deepened when Homam El Amin was sent off in the 33rd minute for a professional foul on Tajon Buchanan.
David added his second goal in first-half stoppage time to put Canada firmly in control at the break. However, Kone’s injury cast a shadow over what had been a near-perfect performance from the hosts.
Canada continued their dominance after the restart. Nathan Saliba made it 4-0 in the 63rd minute with a curling free-kick and celebrated by holding up Kone’s shirt, a gesture that drew loud applause from the crowd.
The hosts added two more goals late on, with Mohammad Al Mannai turning Jacob Shaffelburg’s effort into his own net before David completed his hat-trick in stoppage time. The emphatic victory lifted Canada to the top of Group B, level on points with Switzerland but ahead on goal difference.
