Brazil’s quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title began with a frustrating stumble as Vinícius Júnior’s brilliance rescued a 1-1 draw against a resilient Morocco side in a pulsating Group C encounter at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
The highly anticipated clash saw Morocco once again underline their growing stature on the global stage, earning a valuable point against the five-time world champions and reinforcing their reputation as one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams.
Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari, who made history by becoming the first African player to score at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder capped a flowing attacking move with a composed finish that stunned the thousands of Brazilian supporters inside the 80,663-capacity stadium.
The Atlas Lions, who captured the world’s attention with their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, looked confident and well-organised from the outset. Led by captain Achraf Hakimi and marshalled by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Morocco controlled large portions of the first half and exposed weaknesses in Brazil’s defensive setup.
Brazil, however, found their response through one of their biggest stars. With the Seleção struggling to find their rhythm, Vinícius produced a moment of magic in the 32nd minute. The Real Madrid winger combined neatly with Bruno Guimarães before cutting inside and firing a powerful right-footed shot beyond Bounou to restore parity.
The goal, Vinícius’ 10th for Brazil and his first of the tournament, breathed life into Carlo Ancelotti’s side and prevented what would have been a damaging opening defeat.
Despite enjoying greater possession after the break, Brazil struggled to impose themselves on a disciplined Moroccan defence. Bounou made several important saves, while Morocco remained a constant threat on the counterattack through Saibari, Brahim Díaz and Azzedine Ounahi.
Ancelotti introduced tactical changes in search of a winner, but Brazil never truly reached top gear. The South Americans appeared vulnerable in midfield and lacked the attacking fluency that has long been synonymous with the Seleção, leaving them with work to do as the tournament progresses.
