Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their preparations for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on a winning note, defeating Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses 2-1 in an international friendly match at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, on Friday.
The nine-time African champions asserted their dominance early in the contest, controlling possession and dictating the tempo for large periods of the game.
Nigeria’s breakthrough came in the 32nd minute after the hosts were awarded a penalty. Veteran forward Asisat Oshoala calmly stepped up to convert from the spot, marking her return to the national team with a goal. It was Oshoala’s first appearance for the Super Falcons since the WAFCON 2024 final, and she wasted no time in making an impact.
The Super Falcons continued to press forward and were rewarded in the 43rd minute when Toni Payne doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a well-taken finish following a flowing attacking move. Payne, who was also making her return to the national team after the 2024 WAFCON final, underlined the quality and experience within the squad with an impressive display.
The hosts remained in control for most of the encounter, limiting Senegal’s attacking opportunities while creating chances of their own.
However, the Teranga Lionesses reduced the deficit in the 86th minute, setting up a nervy finish. Despite the late pressure from the visitors, Nigeria held firm to secure the victory.
The match was the first-ever meeting between the Super Falcons and the Teranga Lionesses and served as an important part of both teams’ preparations for the upcoming WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
Both sides will meet again in a second friendly fixture at the same venue on June 8 as they continue fine-tuning their preparations. Head Coach Justine Madugu and his team remain focused on building momentum ahead of the continental showpiece, where the Super Falcons will be aiming to successfully defend their title.
