Nigerian Teen Stars Power Historic Relay Triumph

Team Nigeria delivered another impressive performance on Day 4 of the CAA African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, clinching gold in the women’s 4x100m relay and silver in the men’s event as Nigerian athletes continued their strong showing at the continental competition.

Nigeria’s women’s quartet of Rosemary Nwankwo, Obi Jennifer Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu stormed to victory in the 4x100m relay, clocking 42.94 seconds to successfully defend their African title.

The Nigerian team held off a determined challenge from Liberia, who settled for silver, while hosts Ghana claimed bronze.
The victory marked Team Nigeria’s fourth consecutive African title in the women’s 4x100m relay, extending a remarkable dominance that began in Asaba in 2018 and continued through Mauritius 2022, Douala 2024 and now Accra 2026.

The triumph was made even more remarkable by the youthful makeup of the squad. Miracle Ezechukwu sat for her JAMB examination only last month before travelling to Accra for the championships, while Rosemary Nwankwo is still a secondary school student in SS2, highlighting the depth of emerging talent in Nigerian athletics.

In the men’s 4x100m relay final, Nigeria secured a hard-fought silver medal after the quartet of Favour Ashe, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin and Chidera Ezeakor clocked 38.70 seconds to finish second.

Nigeria appeared destined for bronze before anchor runner Chidera Ezeakor produced a brilliant final leg to overtake Ghana and seal silver for Team Nigeria. Ivory Coast won the race with a time of 38.52 seconds, while Ghana finished third.

Team Nigeria will return to action on Day 5 of the championships, with several athletes set to compete in various events, including the highly anticipated men’s and women’s 200m races, as the country continues its pursuit of more medals in Accra.
