Kwankwaso Quits NNPP, Cites Need for Strategic Repositioning

Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), bringing an end to his leadership role in the party with immediate effect.

Kwankwaso confirmed the development in a press statement dated March 29, 2026, and shared via his official X page.

He wrote, “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.”

“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he said.

Kwankwaso explained that his exit was driven by the need to reposition politically, noting that the country’s evolving political landscape demands fresh alignment.

“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.

He expressed gratitude to the leadership of the party, including the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and other organs of the party for their support during his time.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman… and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” he said.

Kwankwaso also acknowledged the contributions of party members across all levels, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, praising their dedication to the party’s vision.

“I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party from the ward to the state level… for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission,” he added.
