Goals from Moses Simon and Jerome Akor Adams earned Nigeria a 2–1 victory over Iran in an international friendly played on Friday in Antalya, Turkey.
At the Corendon Airlines Park, the Super Eagles blended early attacking intent with disciplined defending—early signs of an Eric Chelle side still taking shape but already developing a clear identity. The three-time AFCON champions asserted themselves from the outset.
Nigeria took the lead just six minutes into the game. Samuel Chukwueze split Iran’s defence with a well-weighted through pass to Moses Simon, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. The Super Eagles controlled much of the first half but were unable to extend their advantage before the break.
At halftime, Chelle made several changes, introducing debutant Emmanuel Fernandez for Semi Ajayi. Nigeria maintained their intensity after the restart and doubled their lead in the 51st minute when Ademola Lookman set up Akor Adams, who finished clinically.
Further substitutions followed, with Chibuike Nwaiwu—called up as a replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey—making his debut after coming on for Igoh Ogbu.
Iran reduced the deficit midway through the second half, as Mehdi Taremi found the back of the net to set up a tense finish. However, Nigeria managed the closing stages effectively, with Chelle introducing Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to maintain control.
Frank Onyeka also featured late on, replacing Lookman, as Nigeria held on to secure the win.
The result marks Nigeria’s second victory over Iran, adding to their 1998 Carlsberg Cup triumph in Hong Kong, while their last meeting at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil ended in a goalless draw.
The Super Eagles will next face Jordan on March 31, offering Chelle another opportunity to fine-tune his squad ahead of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
