Gyökeres, 16-Year-Old Dowman Strike Late As Arsenal Beat Everton To Go 10 Points Clear
Arsenal needed two late goals from Viktor Gyökeres and 16-year-old Max Dowman to edge past Everton and move 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
The contest at the Emirates appeared destined to end in a stalemate as Everton defended resolutely and looked set to secure a hard-fought draw against the league leaders.
However, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 89th minute when Gyökeres tapped into an empty net after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford completely misjudged a cross delivered into the penalty area.
In search of a late equaliser, Everton pushed everyone forward and won a corner deep into stoppage time, with Pickford joining the attack in the Arsenal box.
But the gamble backfired as Dowman collected the loose ball, beat two defenders and raced clear before calmly rolling the ball into the empty net to seal the victory and spark wild celebrations inside Emirates Stadium.
The goal also secured Dowman a place in the record books as he became the youngest scorer in Premier League history, surpassing the previous mark set by James Vaughan in 2005.
Despite the defeat, Everton delivered a strong performance and twice came close to taking the lead in the first half. Dwight McNeil was first denied by an acrobatic block from Riccardo Calafiori before the winger struck the post with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
