Newcastle Shock Chelsea As Anthony Gordon’s First-Half Goal Secures Historic Away Victory
Newcastle United dealt a blow to Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after Anthony Gordon’s first-half strike secured a rare away victory at Stamford Bridge.
Gordon slid home the decisive goal in the 18th minute in front of Thomas Tuchel, the England national football team manager, as the home fans later booed the Blues off the pitch. The defeat marked Chelsea’s first home loss to Newcastle since 2012.
Chelsea had begun brightly and created several early opportunities. Wesley Fofana missed a free header before chances also fell to Alejandro Garnacho, Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernández.
However, Newcastle took the lead when Joe Willock beat Chelsea’s offside trap to reach a pass from Tino Livramento before squaring for Gordon to slot home from close range.
Shortly after the opener, the video assistant referee (VAR) reviewed a penalty appeal after Reece James appeared to pull down Malick Thiaw inside the box, but no spot-kick was awarded.
Chelsea continued to press for an equaliser, with Palmer forcing a save, while goalkeeper Robert Sánchez — recalled after a series of goalkeeping changes — produced an excellent stop to deny Jacob Ramsey shortly before half-time.
Despite trailing at the break, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior attempted to spark a comeback by introducing striker Liam Delap in place of defender Malo Gusto.
The Blues were ultimately booed off at full-time after suffering back-to-back defeats at home and in Europe.
The victory lifts Newcastle to ninth in the Premier League standings, while Chelsea remain fifth, having played one game more than Liverpool F.C., who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
