The Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has called for intensified cancer awareness campaigns, stressing that increased sensitisation would encourage more people to undergo regular screenings and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Mrs. Anani made the call at Government House, Benin City, while addressing staff of her office and health sector stakeholders during activities to mark World Cancer Day.
She urged stakeholders to strengthen collaboration in addressing the rising incidence of cancer in communities, noting that collective action is essential to achieving a healthier Edo State in line with the administration’s 2026 health goals.
“Cancer isn’t just a health issue; it’s a call to action for all of us. It affects families, communities, and our economy. We must support awareness initiatives, encourage regular screenings, and provide resources for those affected,” she said.
The Coordinator emphasised that many cancers are preventable and manageable when detected early, underscoring the importance of routine medical check-ups and prompt treatment to reduce mortality.
She also highlighted ongoing health reforms in the state, including the Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS), which is aimed at expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
Mrs. Anani commended the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration for prioritising citizens’ wellbeing through investments in healthcare infrastructure, workforce development, and improved service delivery.
She reaffirmed her office’s commitment to promoting partnerships that support cancer prevention and control, as well as providing assistance to individuals and families affected by the disease.
