Alaafin’s Wife Hails Akesan Market As Pillar Of Yoruba Culture, Economy

Ayaba Abiwunmi Owoade, Wife of the Alaafin of Oyo, has praised Akesan Market as a historic institution central to Yoruba culture and economy.

Receiving market leaders led by Iyaloja-General Alhaja Peju Bakare, Ayaba Owoade noted that markets existed long before money, serving as hubs for trade, information, and community gatherings.

“Markets were not just economic centres; they were civic spaces, connecting people and sustaining towns,” she said.

She emphasised that markets like Akesan support local entrepreneurship, generate employment, and keep money circulating within communities. “Akesan combines traditional energy with modern vibrancy, welcoming traders and customers alike,” the Queen Consort added.

Ayaba Owoade also praised the Iyaloja-General for her leadership and commitment, describing her as a pillar of resilience and community sustenance.

In response, the Iyaloja-General, Chief Mrs Bakare, praised the Alaafin as a proactive, visionary, and peace-loving monarch.

She pledged the continued support of the market leadership and prayed for the Alaafin’s long life, good health, and the continued development of Oyo Kingdom, Oyo State, and Nigeria as a whole.
