Edo Govt To Sanction Non-Compliant Commercial Vehicles As Colour Code Enforcement Starts
The Edo State Ministry of Transportation has announced the commencement of enforcement and mop-up operations on the Commercial Vehicle Colour Code Scheme across the state, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen security, regulate commercial transportation and enhance public safety.
In a statement issued and signed by the Spokesperson for the Ministry, Agbongiasede Gloria, the ministry said the exercise is in line with an existing state policy that mandates the compulsory painting and registration of commercial vehicles operating within Edo State, stressing that the initiative is not new but a reinforcement of an established regulation.
According to the statement, the enforcement and mop-up exercise will commence on Monday, January 12.
Under the scheme, commercial vehicles including vanettes, minibuses and Mitsubishi buses operating within the state are required to bear the approved state colour combination of yellow with fire-red stripes and obtain a security code from the Ministry of Transportation.
The ministry explained that each registered vehicle would be issued a unique tracking identification number, which would be captured in a central database to enable prompt identification and tracking of vehicles used in criminal activities, thereby supporting security operations and investigations.
Speaking on the exercise, the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Saturday Uwilekhue Idehen, JP, said the government was moving decisively to close security gaps created by non-compliance within the transport sector.
Idehen warned that commercial vehicles operating outside the approved colour code and registration framework after the commencement date would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
He urged operators yet to comply with the colour code requirement to do so within the stipulated period, noting that enforcement would be sustained.
The ministry also advised members of the public to patronise only commercial vehicles bearing the official security code, as the Edo State Government continues to strengthen security and order within the transportation system.
