Oworonshoki Residents Protest Midnight Demolition Of Properties, Block Third Mainland Bridge
Some residents of Oworonshoki, in the Kosofe area of Lagos State, on Monday staged a protest on the Third Mainland Bridge over the alleged midnight demolition of their properties.
Chanting solidarity songs, the protesters accused the Lagos State Government of rendering them homeless without prior notice or compensation. They demanded justice and immediate redress for the destruction of their homes and businesses.
The demonstration caused massive traffic congestion on one of Lagos’ busiest routes, with gridlock stretching for several kilometres and leaving motorists stranded for hours.
During the protest, the demonstrators confronted the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, vowing not to vacate the bridge until demolition equipment was withdrawn from Oworonshoki.
Security operatives were later deployed to disperse the protesters and restore order, reopening the blocked lanes to traffic.
Reacting to the development, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Lagos State Governor, Jubril Gawat, confirmed that normalcy had been restored.
He wrote on X: “UPDATE: Road opened now. Men of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Command have cleared the road. The backlog on the bridge is still much BUT moving steadily.”
