The Lagos State University (LASU), through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, has revealed the entrenchment of stricter admission requirements as part of its new admission policies to enhance quality, transparency, accountability, and alignment with international standards.
This disclosure was made during a sensitisation programme hosted at the Senate Chamber within Ojo Campus, for academic leaders of the university, based on the Reviewed Regulations Guiding Postgraduate Programmes of the University, which is projected to be effective from the 2024/2025 academic session, for a seamless implementation.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, stated that the review of the postgraduate regulations was carried out to strengthen quality assurance and safeguard the integrity of LASU’s postgraduate degrees.
He commended the valuable contributions from staff, departments, and faculties, which helped refine the document before the Senate’s approval, explaining that ” the reviewed regulations introduce uniformity across departments, enhance quality assurance, and establish the Central Review and Regulatory Committee (CRRC) for PhD candidates, initiatives aimed at upholding the credibility of LASU’s postgraduate programmes”.
In his contributions, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, noted key changes in the reviewed postgraduate regulations aimed at enhancing quality, transparency, accountability, and alignment with international standards, noting that the reforms prioritise digitalised processes, strong research ethics, quality supervision, and student welfare.
He outlined major reforms such as stricter admission requirements, defined programme timelines, ethical clearance for all research, publication requirements for doctoral candidates, and the establishment of the Central Review and Regulatory Committee (CRRC) to assess PhD progress. He added that a grievance redress mechanism has been introduced to ensure fairness in supervision and examination, asserting that these measures are designed to uphold LASU’s integrity and strengthen its position as a leading research institution in Nigeria and West Africa.
In his remarks, the Dean of Postgraduate School, Prof. Ibrahim Olateju, provided clarifications on the operational details of the reviewed regulations, noting that graduates with old degrees and O-Level deficiencies would no longer be disadvantaged due to new waiver policies.
Olateju also urged strict compliance with admission and clearance procedures on the LACACA platform and cautioned against dual enrolment in postgraduate programmes, reiterating that NYSC certificates remains a compulsory requirement for admission.
The sensitisation exercise was aimed to enhance understanding and compliance among stakeholders, ensuring the smooth exercise of the postgraduate reforms within the University.
