Ondo Govt Moves To Revive Tourism As Commissioner Visits Igbara-Oke Petroglyphs
The Ondo State government has initiated moves to revive the tourism sector as Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Afolabi Adesoji, paid official visit to the historic Igbara-Oke Petroglyphs of immense archaeological and cultural significance.
The visit, coordinated by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Akure Office, was part of the Aiyedatiwa-led administration’s tourism revival agenda aimed at preserving Ondo State’s rich cultural heritage and unlocking its tourism potential.
Declared a National Monument on March 19, 1962, the Igbara-Oke Petroglyphs consist of intricate rock carvings believed to date back centuries. These carvings remain a living testimony to the creativity, beliefs, and identity of the region’s forebears.
Speaking at the site, the Commissioner reaffirmed the government’s determination to protect the monument and transform it into a major cultural tourism hub.
“Under Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, we are committed to ensuring that heritage sites like the Igbara-Oke Petroglyphs are preserved for future generations, while also being developed into attractions that will boost our tourism economy and foster community pride,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ifedore local government, Oladipupo Ajibola, who received the Commissioner, commended the state government’s attention to the site, pledging the full cooperation of the local community in safeguarding and promoting the petroglyphs.
