As Rt (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa celebrates 10 years as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, the lawmakers have resolved to draft and pass a bill to establish a Legislative Institute and an Annual Legislative Awards ceremony in his honour.
This move is to immortalize his contributions as the longest-serving Speaker in the history of the Lagos Assembly.
Introducing a motion under Matter of Urgent Public Importance during plenary session, Hon. Ladi Ajomale (Oshodi/Isolo 2) praised Obasa’s leadership, describing him as a symbol of resilience, maturity, and strategic focus, especially during complex political periods.
Ajomale lauded Obasa’s handling of recent internal crisis as a testament to his “unmatched leadership qualities.”
Sharing similar views, the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu (Ikeja 1) hailed Obasa’s decade-long journey as “rosy and impactful,” noting transformative reforms implemented since 2015.
Hon. Owolabi Ajani ( Lagos Mainland 1) described him as a “mentor and proven legislator,” while Hon. Desmond Elliot urged him to document his journey and ideology in a memoir for the benefit of future lawmakers.
In his remarks, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2) emphasized the importance of immortalizing Obasa’s leadership legacy through both the proposed Legislative Institute and a written memoir.
Several lawmakers took turns to commend the Speaker’s strategic foresight, institutional integrity, and dedication to the autonomy of the legislature.
Responding, Obasa attributed his political journey to divine grace and expressed gratitude to his family, constituents in Agege, fellow lawmakers, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he credited as instrumental in his political rise.
Obasa stated “From my days as a councilor in 1999 to my current position as Speaker, the people of Agege have stood firmly by me. I dedicate this honour to them”.
He urged lawmakers to remain united and protect the autonomy of the House, saying “Let the House always come first. Do not allow any external interference to compromise this great institution.”
