Ogun Issues Fresh Flood Alert, Urges Residents In Vulnerable Communities To Relocate
The Ogun State Government has issued a flood alert ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, urging residents in vulnerable communities to remain vigilant and relocate where necessary.
The warning followed a Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecast predicting heavy rainfall in Ogun.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the first phase recorded intense rainfall and isolated flash floods, but proactive measures, including drainage maintenance, public awareness and improved waste management, limited the impact.
NiMet forecasts that the second phase will begin in September, with rainfall averaging about 360mm.
The government warned that prolonged rain, controlled releases from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations could cause river and coastal flooding.
Residents of Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, Warewa and parts of Abeokuta were advised to remain alert and relocate if necessary. The warning also covers vulnerable coastal communities in Ogun Waterside, Ijebu East and Ipokia, as well as areas along the Ilo and Iju Rivers.
Fish farmers in floodplains and river corridors, particularly those in Eriwe, Yemule, Ilase and Ayegbami, were urged to harvest promptly to minimise losses.
The government directed relevant agencies, local authorities, emergency organisations and community leaders to intensify monitoring, public awareness and flood-response efforts, while keeping drainage channels clear.
Oresanya assured residents that the government would continue monitoring weather and hydrological conditions with relevant agencies and urged the public to heed further updates.
