The Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has inaugurated the Technical Working Group on Climate and Health to strengthen the state’s response to climate-related health risks.
Speaking at the inauguration in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said climate change was now a major public health challenge, contributing to heat-related illnesses, flooding, drought, infectious diseases, respiratory conditions and food insecurity.
She said the multi-sectoral group, comprising government agencies, technical experts, development partners and academia, would support risk assessment, preparedness, evidence generation and the integration of climate concerns into health policies and programmes.
The commissioner called for collaboration among government agencies, partners, civil society, the private sector and communities to build a climate-resilient health system.
The Permanent Secretary, Dr. Akintunde Ayinde, represented by Dr. Idris Fasasi, described the inauguration as a step toward proactive prevention and preparedness. He said the group would strengthen surveillance and early-warning systems, improve emergency preparedness, mobilise funding, protect vulnerable populations and promote climate-resilient health facilities.
He also urged stronger research collaboration with the University of Ibadan and other institutions to develop local solutions.
Earlier, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Olaniyan Babatunde, thanked stakeholders and urged members to remain committed to building a healthier and more resilient Oyo State.
