Defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a scintillating attacking display on Wednesday night, thrashing Egypt 6-2 at the Stade Moulay Hassan to book a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Nigeria dominated from the outset and took the lead in the 21st minute when Asisat Oshoala calmly converted a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a handball by an Egyptian defender.
The Super Falcons doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time as substitute Gift Monday finished off a well-worked short-corner routine involving Toni Payne and Rinsola Babajide.
Egypt, however, responded moments later to reduce the deficit, sending both teams into the halftime break with Nigeria leading 2-1.
The nine-time African champions resumed with the same intensity after the restart, and substitute Uchenna Kanu restored the two-goal cushion in the 57th minute with a composed left-footed finish.
Nigeria continued to pile on the pressure and were awarded two more penalties after VAR interventions. Christy Ucheibe converted the first in the 80th minute before captain Rasheedat Ajibade added the fifth from the spot eight minutes later.
The Super Falcons completed the rout deep into stoppage time when Gift Monday and Ajibade combined brilliantly to set up Joy Omewa, who tapped home her first-ever WAFCON goal. Egypt grabbed a late consolation, but it was merely a footnote on a dominant Nigerian performance.
The emphatic victory sends the Super Falcons into the quarter-finals, where they will renew their long-standing rivalry with Cameroon for a place in the last four.
