Team Nigeria continued its impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Sunday as weightlifter Ruth Asuqo Nyong won the silver medal in the women’s 48kg event.

Nyong produced a strong performance, lifting a combined total of 168kg to finish second and secure Nigeria’s seventh medal of the Games.

India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom claimed the gold medal with a dominant total lift of 190kg, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry settled for bronze after recording 167kg, just one kilogram behind the Nigerian.

Nyong’s silver medal further underlined Team Nigeria’s growing success in Glasgow, where the country’s athletes have continued to deliver podium finishes across several sports.

Her achievement has been hailed by the National Sports Commission (NSC), which commended the weightlifter for her determination and resilience on the Commonwealth stage.

With medals continuing to come from different events, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its strong showing as competition continues in Scotland.
