Team Nigeria’s medal-winning para powerlifters have received immediate financial rewards following their impressive performances at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, highlighting the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising sporting excellence.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, announced that the medalists received instant cash rewards at the competition venue, alongside additional payments credited directly to their bank accounts.
Roland Ezuruike, who won silver in the Men’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting (Group A) event, received a total reward of $5,000. His package comprised a $2,000 instant cash bonus from the NSC and an additional $3,000 paid directly into his bank account.
Women’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting gold medalist Esther Nworgu received a total reward of $10,000 after clinching Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games. She was presented with $5,000 in cash at the venue, while another $5,000 was transferred directly to her account.
Fellow para powerlifter Esther Onyema, who claimed silver in the same event, also received a total reward of $5,000, consisting of a $2,000 cash presentation at the competition venue and an additional $3,000 paid into her bank account.
According to the NSC, the prompt disbursement of the incentives reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to rewarding Nigerian athletes immediately for exceptional performances on the international stage, as Team Nigeria continues its Commonwealth Games campaign on a winning note.
