The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection, public safety, and sustainable development through regular monitoring of industrial facilities and enforcement of environmental regulations.
The Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, said this during inspections of a rubber processing factory and Egor Market in Benin City.
At the factory, Adams said the visit was to assess compliance with environmental standards and reassure host communities that the operations posed no threat to public health or the environment. He said the company had substantially complied, though a few minor issues were identified and must be addressed.
He urged the company to further reduce odour emissions from its processing lines and praised the management for its efforts. In response, the factory owner, Dr. Caesar Osaheni Iyayi, thanked the commissioner for the inspection and said the company had invested in odour control, including a 900-degree Celsius incinerator. He pledged full compliance with all recommendations.
At Egor Market, Adams inspected the environmental and safety risks linked to traders operating beneath high-tension cables. He said the incident was a warning against trading in dangerous areas and directed affected traders to vacate the corridor and relocate to approved market spaces.
He also urged traders to keep their surroundings clean and maintain access roads, noting that sanitation is a shared responsibility. Adams said the traders welcomed the intervention, agreed to relocate, and promised to keep the market clean. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental and safety laws to protect lives and property.
