Switzerland Top Group B After Victory Over Canada

Switzerland beat co-hosts Canada 2-1 in Vancouver to finish top of Group B and reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.
Second-half goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi sealed the win, extending Switzerland’s run of reaching the knockout rounds in four straight World Cups. They will return to Vancouver on July 3 to face one of the third-placed teams from Groups E, F, G, H, I or J.
Canada also advanced for the first time in their history, but finished second and lost home advantage. They will play the runners-up of Group A in Los Angeles on June 28.
The first half was tight, with Switzerland closest to scoring through Breel Embolo, who was denied by Maxime Crepeau. Canada struggled to create chances and managed only three shots on target.
The game opened up after the break. Vargas scored a minute into the second half after a cross from Manzambi, before Manzambi added a second 11 minutes later following good work from Embolo.
Canada pulled one back through substitute Promise David in the 76th minute, but Switzerland held on to secure top spot.
