The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and communities through timely information sharing.
He made the call on Wednesday at the 17th Annual Hijrah Lecture held at the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex, Alausa, Lagos.
Obasa said while government and security agencies have the duty of protecting lives and property, citizens must also support efforts to ensure safety.
“While leaders have responsibilities regarding security, citizens also have a duty to collaborate with leaders and security agencies to ensure a safer society,” he said.
He urged community leaders, local government chairmen, religious leaders, vigilante groups, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and civil society organisations to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 2026 edition of the lecture, Hon. Ibrahim Ajani, urged Nigerians to reject violence and criminality and show patriotism in their daily lives.
In his lecture, Air Commodore (Dr.) Lukeman Abiodun, former Director of Islamic Affairs at the Nigerian Air Force, said security and citizenship are inseparable in Islam, stressing the sanctity of human life and peaceful coexistence.
He also noted ongoing joint military operations aimed at defeating terrorists and restoring peace.
Other guest lecturers, Sheikh Abdurraheem Abdullahi Salaty and Sheikh Bukhari Ahmad Ayinla, said government alone cannot guarantee security and urged citizens to support peace, justice, and lawful redress.
