Nigeria have emerged as the second-highest-ranked team to miss out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings.
The Super Eagles are ranked 26th in the world, behind only Denmark, who sit in 21st place, among the highest-ranked nations that failed to secure a place at the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Nigeria’s absence from football’s biggest stage has continued to attract attention from players, coaches and football stakeholders across the globe, particularly given the country’s status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.
Former England captain John Terry described Nigeria’s failure to qualify as one of the tournament’s most notable omissions, citing the country’s rich football heritage and abundance of talent.
“Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven’t had the opportunity to play in the tournament. I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they’ve got some great individuals. They’re a great nation,” Terry said.
The Super Eagles missed qualification after a disappointing CAF qualifying campaign, extending their absence from the FIFA World Cup following their failure to reach the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Despite the setback, Nigeria remain among Africa’s highest-ranked national teams. The Super Eagles currently trail only Morocco and Senegal on the continent, while Algeria and Egypt complete Africa’s top five-ranked sides.
The rankings underscore the paradox of Nigeria’s current standing in world football — a team widely regarded as one of Africa’s strongest yet absent from consecutive World Cup tournaments. With a new generation of talented players emerging, attention will now turn to rebuilding and ensuring the Super Eagles return to football’s biggest stage in future competitions.
