The FIFA World Cup 2026 got underway in spectacular fashion on June 11 as Mexico welcomed the world with a dazzling opening ceremony at the iconic Estadio Azteca, celebrating music, culture, and global unity.
The ceremony opened with a vibrant tribute to Mexico’s indigenous heritage and Aztec civilization. Performers filled the pitch in a colourful display, while acclaimed Mexican singer Lila Downs greeted fans in both Spanish and English.
“People of the world, welcome to Mexico,” she declared, highlighting the unifying power of football. A giant golden World Cup trophy stood at the centre of the stadium as presenters explained that the production drew inspiration from Mexico’s rich ancestry and cultural traditions.
Ahead of the tournament’s opening match between Mexico and South Africa, FIFA World Cup Ambassador Salma Hayek Pinault addressed supporters from around the globe.
“In this stadium, together with Canada and the United States, we welcome the 48 flags,” she said in Spanish. “We Mexicans are deeply honoured to be here where the World Cup begins.”
Her remarks were followed by a parade featuring the flags of all 48 participating nations.
The ceremony then shifted into a vibrant showcase of music. Venezuelan singer Danny Ocean thrilled fans with his blend of Latin pop, reggaeton, and electronic dance music. Joined by dancers from Ballet Folklórico de México, he performed “Partidazo,” the official tournament track featured on the FIFA World Cup 2026 album.
Mexican pop star Belinda and renowned cumbia group Los Ángeles Azules followed with an energetic rendition of “Por Ella (FIFA World Cup 2026).” Belinda dazzled in a hot-pink corset top and embellished jeans, while the band members appeared in coordinated gold outfits.
Legendary Mexican rock band Maná further ignited the atmosphere with their classic hit “Oye Mi Amor.” Lead vocalist Fher Olvera, dressed in a striking red trench coat, led the crowd in a singalong that became one of the ceremony’s standout moments.
Colombian superstar J Balvin maintained the momentum with a high-energy performance alongside fellow Colombian artist Ryan Castro. Balvin opened with “Qué Calor” before joining Castro for their 2026 collaboration “Una A La Vez.” He concluded his set with “I Like It,” his global hit with Cardi B and Bad Bunny.
The ceremony also celebrated the tournament’s historic expansion from 32 to 48 teams. Flag bearers entered the stadium one after another carrying their national flags before forming a circle around the pitch. The three host nations—Mexico, Canada, and the United States—received special recognition during the procession.
Resembling an Olympic-style opening ceremony, the parade underscored the global reach of the FIFA World Cup. It was followed by a performance of “DNA,” the official FIFA World Cup 2026 anthem, by renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and singer EJAE. The song also features contributions from David Guetta and Megan Thee Stallion and supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.
Shakira, Burna Boy Steal the Show
The highlight of the evening arrived when global music icon Shakira took centre stage. Invited by FIFA to create an official anthem for the tournament, the Colombian superstar marked her third World Cup anthem and third appearance at a World Cup opening ceremony.
Shakira debuted her new song, “Dai Dai,” instantly captivating the crowd with her powerful vocals and signature dance routines. Moments later, Nigerian Grammy Award-winning star Burna Boy joined her on stage, drawing one of the loudest ovations of the night.
The duo delivered a thrilling performance backed by dancers and elaborate choreography that transformed the stadium into a spectacle of colour and movement. Shakira’s trademark stage presence blended seamlessly with Burna Boy’s infectious energy, creating a memorable cross-cultural performance.
As the show reached its climax, the two global stars united at centre stage to sing, “Dale, allez, let’s go!” Fireworks illuminated the night sky as fans erupted in celebration, bringing a breathtaking opening ceremony to a close.
