The Super Falcons are targeting a second consecutive victory over Senegal’s Lionesses of Teranga when both teams meet in Monday’s international friendly encounter, following a hard-fought contest in Ikenne-Remo on Friday.
Head Coach Justine Madugu said on Sunday that his side would adopt a more aggressive and purposeful approach in the rematch at the Remo Stars Sports Complex as both nations continue preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to begin next month in Morocco.
The nine-time African champions secured a 2-1 victory in Friday’s first friendly, courtesy of goals from Asisat Oshoala, who converted from the penalty spot, and midfielder Toni Payne. Senegal reduced the deficit with four minutes remaining in regulation time.
Nigeria and Senegal have previously met in WAFCON qualifying competition. In 2016, the Super Falcons defeated the Lionesses 3-1 on aggregate, drawing the first leg 1-1 before winning the return fixture 2-0.
At the forthcoming WAFCON in Morocco, Nigeria will be aiming for a record-extending 11th continental title. The Super Falcons have been drawn in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and debutants Malawi, while Senegal will compete in Group A with hosts Morocco, Algeria and Kenya.
The tournament is scheduled to hold from July 25 to August 16 in Morocco.
Beyond the continental title, the championship will also serve as a qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the tournament in Brazil, while the fifth-placed team will advance to an intercontinental playoff for another chance to reach the World Cup finals.
