Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, delivered a dominant performance to secure a 2–0 victory over Malawi in the first leg of their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup final qualifying round fixture in Ikenne-Remo on Saturday.
The result significantly boosts Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for yet another edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, a tournament they have featured in consistently since its inception as a U-19 competition in Canada in 2002.
Despite the comfortable scoreline, the encounter required tactical adjustments from head coach Moses Adukwu after a frustrating first half in which the Falconets created numerous chances but failed to convert.
Malawi’s goalkeeper, Emily Nkhwazi, played a key role in keeping her side in the game early on, producing a series of impressive saves to deny the hosts.
From kickoff, Nigeria dominated possession, stretching play across the pitch and forcing Malawi’s Young Scorchers into a compact defensive shape, but lacked the clinical edge to break the deadlock before halftime.
The breakthrough came shortly after the restart, as increased intensity paid off in the 47th minute when a dangerous delivery into the box caused confusion in the Malawian defence, resulting in an own goal by Maureen Kenneth.
The Falconets built on that momentum ten minutes later, with Faridat Abdulwahab setting up Kindness Ifeanyi, who finished calmly to double Nigeria’s lead and give the team a deserved advantage.
Malawi made late attempts to respond, but Nigeria held firm defensively to preserve the lead. The Falconets were later rewarded with ₦1 million from Remo Stars FC President, Hon. Kunle Soname, while the return leg is scheduled for May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, kicking off at 3:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. Nigerian time).
