Penalties, VAR Decisions Dominate Arsenal–Atlético 1-1 Thriller

Nigerian international Ademola Lookman failed to find the back of the net as Atlético Madrid held Arsenal in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash on Wednesday night in Madrid.
Both sides will now head into the second leg level after playing out a 1-1 draw in a tense encounter.
The match was largely defined by penalty decisions and VAR interventions, which played a crucial role in the outcome.
Viktor Gyökeres won and converted a penalty just before half-time to hand Arsenal a valuable lead going into the break.
However, Atlético Madrid responded in the 56th minute when Julián Álvarez fired his spot kick into the top corner after Ben White was penalised for handball.
Arsenal thought they had a chance to regain the lead in the 79th minute when another penalty was awarded.
But following a VAR review, officials ruled that there was insufficient contact on Eberechi Eze, overturning the initial decision.
The winner of the two-legged semi-final will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in next month’s final.
