Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in charge, ending a brief and turbulent spell at the club.
Rosenior had signed a five-and-a-half-year contract following his move from RC Strasbourg, which is also owned by Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. His appointment was initially viewed as part of a long-term project.
However, results fell short of expectations, with the Blues managing only 11 wins in 23 matches across all competitions. A 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday proved decisive, marking Chelsea’s fifth consecutive league loss without scoring — their worst such run since 1912.
After the match, Rosenior described the performance as “indefensible” and “unacceptable,” as frustration among travelling supporters grew increasingly evident. The defeat left Chelsea seventh in the Premier League standings.
They now sit seven points behind Liverpool FC, who occupy the fifth and final UEFA Champions League qualification spot, intensifying pressure on the club’s hierarchy to act.
In a statement, Chelsea praised Rosenior’s professionalism but admitted that recent performances had not met the required standards. The club emphasised that the decision was not taken lightly, especially with key fixtures still to be played this season.
Potential replacements are already being considered, including Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Edin Terzić. Iraola is set to leave AFC Bournemouth at the end of the season, while Silva’s contract at Fulham FC expires in July.
Assistant coach Calum McFarlane has been placed in interim charge until the end of the campaign. His first assignment will be Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium against Leeds United, as Chelsea seek a place in the final.
