Ex-Basketball Player, Olumide Oyedeji, Lands IOC Athletes’ Commission Role, Boosting Nigeria’s Global Sports Voice
Former basketball player Olumide Oyedeji has been appointed to the Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s representation in global sports governance.
Oyedeji, who currently serves as Secretary of the World Olympians Association (WOA) and Chairman of the Nigeria Athletes’ Commission, will represent the WOA on the IOC Athletes’ Commission as part of a 23-member board.
His selection is widely attributed to his leadership and sustained advocacy for the rights and welfare of athletes, both in Nigeria and on the global stage.
The commission reflects diverse continental representation, including Gabby Ahrens for Africa, alongside Isabel Swan (Pan America), Ronald Rauhe (Europe), Kenneth Wallace (Oceania), and Ning Ding (Asia).
In a further boost for Nigeria, table tennis veteran, Olufunke Oshonaike, has also been elected to the commission, reinforcing the country’s growing influence within the Olympic Movement.
The commission is chaired by Spanish basketball legend Pau Gasol, with vice chairs including Maja Włoszczowska, Humphrey Kayange, and Oluseyi Smith.
The IOC Athletes’ Commission serves as the voice of athletes within the Olympic Movement, advocating for their interests, supporting both sporting and post-career development, and strengthening the global network of athlete representatives.
Comprising 23 members, the commission operates on eight-year terms, with most members elected by fellow Olympians during the Olympic Games. Typically, four members are elected during each Summer Games and two during each Winter Games, while the chairperson also sits on the IOC Executive Board.
