Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes suffered a significant setback as a second-half strike from Alex Scott secured a shock victory for Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.
The defeat denied the Gunners the chance to open up a 12-point lead at the top of the table ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday.
Ahead of the crucial encounter, manager Mikel Arteta had urged fans to arrive early and create a strong atmosphere, especially with Arsenal’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup ambitions already ended in recent weeks.
However, it was Bournemouth who started the brighter of the two sides. The visitors took an early lead when Junior Kroupi reacted quickest to turn in Adrien Truffert’s deflected cross from close range.
Arsenal responded positively after falling behind and found an equaliser through Viktor Gyokeres, who calmly converted from the penalty spot after Ryan Christie was penalised for handball.
Despite increasing pressure from the hosts, the tension inside the Emirates grew as Arteta introduced attacking options Eberechi Eze, Leandro Trossard and teenage prospect Max Dowman in a bid to swing the game.
But Bournemouth delivered the decisive moment. Alex Scott latched onto Evanilson’s flick at the edge of the box and fired past David Raya to seal all three points and silence the home crowd.
The result extends Bournemouth’s unbeaten league run to 12 matches, while Arsenal remain top of the table but have now played two games more than second-placed Manchester City. Arteta’s side face a crucial trip to Manchester next weekend in a fixture that could prove decisive in the title race.
