The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the people of Badagry to preserve and uphold the legacy of the late monarch, Oba Babatunde Akran, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Paramount Ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge on Wednesday during the ninth-day spiritual prayers held in honour of the late monarch at the Akran’s Palace in Badagry, Lagos.
The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; members of the Lagos State Executive Council; serving and former public office holders; religious, traditional and political leaders; members of the royal family; and residents of Badagry.
The governor described Oba Akran’s 49-year reign as impactful and well spent, noting that the monarch stood for unity, peace and togetherness, and left behind enduring values worthy of preservation.
He extended his condolences to the people of Badagry and the royal family, adding that it was an honour for him and members of his cabinet to attend the event as representatives of the state government.
Sanwo-Olu assured that his administration would continue to support the family of the late monarch and fulfil all commitments made to the people of Badagry, urging residents to emulate the values of peace, unity and cultural pride exemplified by the late Akran.
He also announced the state government’s commitment to the speedy construction of a new Badagry Central Palace, stating that contractors had been directed to commence work immediately, and assured residents that the second phase of the Market–General Hospital road construction to Ajido would soon begin.
Earlier, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, and the Aholu of Ajido Kingdom, HRM Saheed Adamson, described the late monarch as a symbol of unity, wisdom and cultural pride, noting his role in strengthening traditional leadership and promoting peace across Badagry.
