The Lagos West Senatorial District candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, Hafis Bello, has said the district deserves a senator whose primary loyalty is to the people rather than political party interests.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, Bello argued that the challenges confronting residents of Lagos West are not a failure of democracy but the result of poor representation over the years.
“The people of Lagos West have not been let down by democracy. They have been let down by the kind of politicians democracy keeps sending to represent them,” he said, stressing the need for a new approach to leadership in the district.
Bello maintained that Lagos West requires a representative with practical experience in production, agriculture and economic development, saying athe district needs someone who understands the realities of livelihoods and food systems beyond what is contained in policy documents.
The ADC candidate expressed concern over persistent infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment and underdevelopment in several communities across the district.
Bello added that his background in agribusiness and involvement in national policy discussions would position him to attract greater federal attention and development opportunities to the area.
Speaking on Badagry, he described the border community as a strategic economic and tourism hub that has not received adequate legislative attention, saying “Badagry’s location along the Nigeria–Benin Republic border and the ECOWAS trade corridor presents significant opportunities for economic growth, which have yet to be fully harnessed”.
Explaining his decision to contest on the ADC platform, Bello said he chose a party that would allow him to place the interests of Lagos West residents above partisan considerations, insisting that a senator’s first loyalty must always be to the people.
