The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, His Majesty, Oba Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has joined his ancestors at the age of 89, throwing the ancient coastal town of Badagry into mourning.
The revered monarch was reported to have died in the early hours of Monday, January 12, 2026, though details surrounding the circumstances of his death are yet to be officially disclosed.
Following the news of his passing, Badagry was enveloped in solemnity as traditional rites commenced. Markets across the town were reportedly ordered to close, while the Oro masquerade is expected to make public appearances in line with long-standing customs marking the death of a paramount ruler.
Residents described the mood in Badagry as one of shock and deep reflection, as the kingdom prepares to honour a monarch widely regarded as one of the most influential and longest-reigning traditional rulers in Lagos State.
Oba Menu-Toyi I ascended the throne in 1977 and reigned for 48 years, making him one of the longest-serving monarchs in the state’s history. Beyond the palace, his life was marked by notable contributions to politics, journalism, and education.
Before becoming Akran, he was an active politician and journalist. A member of the historic Action Group, he represented Badagry in the Parliament in 1951 and later served as a minister during Nigeria’s pre-Independence era, playing a role in shaping the political foundation of the country.
The late monarch was also credited with contributing to the establishment of Badagry Grammar School, one of the town’s flagship secondary institutions, reflecting his commitment to education and community development.
As Badagry observes traditional rites and prepares for further announcements from the palace, tributes are already pouring in for a monarch remembered for his longevity, leadership, and enduring legacy.
